The Five Nations are embroiled in one of the most violent wars ever, while they duel one another on an epic scale smaller states are swept into the conflict, forced to take sides in a war that no one wanted. Shinobi are sent to slaughter one another every day, some return, most don't. Some seek simply to end the war while others see it as a chance to grab power for themselves. In the midst of it all the individual is forgotten. But who you are and what you do are twined together, whatever orders are given by your Kage, it is up to you to decide who and what you are.
Amidst shifting political ties the leaders of Sunagakure, Iwagakure and Kirigakure have all vanished, the disappearances occurred with clockwork precision, each Kage vanishing or being murdered within the same hour of the same night. Clearly the proceedings were organized by someone holding the strings, but even the puppeteer's hand has vanished, the assassins drifting into the wild. With no one to blame the Nations do what they do best and pin the blame on one another.
Through dark deeds and skillful misinformation the true architect of the assassinations has pointed the finger of blame squarely at the heart of an old enemy, Konohagakure.
